So a voice notification that things are done is very helpful, it quckly comes and goes, conveys more information than a slack tick, and I can configure it to identify itself.

For each project I work on I have a note.txt that describes very concisely what I'm working on (i.e. formatters2). So when I kick off a task and move on to something else, I get a notification:

formatters2 needs input
formatters2 is done
